Why We Use R134a Refrigerant for Car Air Conditioning Re-Gas Services

Before completing an air conditioning re-gas, we check the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications and confirm the correct refrigerant. We never mix refrigerants or use a cheaper substitute simply because it can produce cold air.

Why the Correct Air Conditioning Refrigerant Matters
Your vehicle manufacturer designs the air conditioning system to operate with a particular refrigerant. The compressor, seals, hoses, service ports, lubricant and operating pressures must all suit that refrigerant.
Using the wrong refrigerant can:
- Reduce cooling performance.
- Affect system pressures.
- Damage seals or other components.
- Contaminate air conditioning equipment.
- Create additional safety risks.
- Make future servicing more difficult and expensive.

What Is R134a Refrigerant?
R134a is an established automotive refrigerant used in many cars, four-wheel drives, commercial vehicles and machinery.
When used in a compatible and properly maintained system, R134a provides dependable cooling performance in Australian driving conditions. It also has zero ozone-depletion potential and an A1 refrigerant safety classification.
Under AS/NZS ISO 817:2016, the A1 classification identifies R134a as having lower chronic toxicity and no flame propagation.
Is R134a Ozone Friendly?
R134a does not contain chlorine and does not deplete the ozone layer. It replaced older refrigerants such as R12, which contributed to ozone depletion and has since been phased out.
Are Other Automotive Air Con Refrigerants Inferior?
Not every alternative refrigerant is inferior. Some are legitimate refrigerants developed for newer, purpose-built air conditioning systems. However, technicians cannot safely treat them as interchangeable with R134a.
The correct refrigerant depends on how the vehicle manufacturer designed the air conditioning system.
R1234yf
Many newer vehicles use R1234yf. It operates differently from R134a, carries a mildly flammable classification and requires compatible servicing equipment and procedures.
R1234yf may be correct for a vehicle designed to use it, but technicians should not treat it as a general replacement for R134a.
Hydrocarbon and Substitute Refrigerants
Some cheaper substitute refrigerants such as Hychill contain hydrocarbons or other gas blends. These products may be marketed as replacements for established automotive refrigerants, but they can introduce compatibility, servicing and flammability concerns.
Hydrocarbon refrigerants are subject to state and territory requirements in Australia. A substitute gas may also conflict with the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications or contaminate equipment used to service other vehicles.
We do not choose a refrigerant based solely on price. We use the refrigerant specified for the vehicle and follow the appropriate servicing procedures.
Why We Don’t Mix Refrigerants
Mixing refrigerants can change operating pressures and make the contents of the system difficult to identify. It can also contaminate recovery and servicing equipment.
If a vehicle contains an unidentified or incorrect refrigerant, we may need to investigate the system before carrying out normal servicing.
